I definitely agree that it affects the body, the mind, and the spirit. Leads to various inner turmoil which leads to outer turmoil if I don’t practice the principles…. If it were just the mental obsession I had to worry about, then once that was removed one could opine that my head would function as good as any normal drinker’s. I have specific maladies in my thought processes, which I have been able to address using the steps. They still bother me from time define spiritual malady to time but at least I know what’s going on. And the solution for me is not psychoanalysis or a chemical intervention, although those have worked in regards to a mental illness I had. The solution has been following the suggestions and giving it over to my understanding of God, which is a gift to those of us not convinced we are right all the time. If you attend AA meetings or are familiar with the 12-step path, you have most likely heard of spiritual malady.
High sponsor involvement over time has been found to predict longer recovery . Sponsorship embodies the fellowship’s altruistic orientation, reflecting a “helping and helper therapy principle” . Sponsorship plays an important role in the recovery process. The basic tenet of this, is that it takes one alcoholic to help another alcoholic achieve sobriety. This has been borne out in millions of cases around the world. Today this would be termed “despite negative consequences”. There are no individualistic programs or people simply doing their own thing, it is a collective program of action. The most beautiful thing about me most days is the fruits of my recovery.
It helps us see ourselves and our condition of alcoholism and how it effects us and others. By sin I mean negative emotions that cause distress to me and others. I am aware that there are many paths to recovery- my path has been the 12-Steps. While this may not be for everybody, the principles contained within the steps and the program are applicable and useful to anyone seeking sobriety and recovery. The word ‘God’ can be a total turn-off for many of us. It is loaded with old ideas and religiosity, tainted by Sober House overuse, abuse, and centuries of bad press. It is sad that countless addicts and alcoholics have rejected 12 Step recovery because the G_d word is up on the wall and included in prayers and literature. As overwhelming as I’m sure this all may seem for someone who’s either never had a spiritual connection, or been disconnected for years, I’d like to assure you it’s not as formidable as it may seem. But first, it’s crucial that you understand the difference between a spiritual experience and a religious one.
This involves training attention or awareness—journaling and practicing mindfulness can aid mediation. Finally, some find meaning and fulfillment in personal interests—such as art or their career—or in their personal relationships. Of course, as long as we have minds, we will make judgments about people and situations. On a basic level, judgments about our surroundings help us survive. But with the help of the tools in 12 Step Recovery, our clients have the opportunity to catch these judgments before they harden into harmful prejudices. Some common signs and symptoms of cirrhosis include fatigue, itchy skin, weight loss, nausea, yellow eyes and skin, abdominal pain and swelling or bruising. In later stage alcoholism, an individual focuses less on hygiene. So, a bad smell could also be related to a lack of motivation or energy it would take to do daily hygiene. These frequent negative thought patterns also lead to unnecessary and excessive amounts of anger, both when drunk and when sober.
For example, this family have just moved into my neighbourhood, they seem wild and out of control. This turned out to be a brilliant idea for two reasons. We are far from being Saints but have a solution Saints would approve and achieve a kind of transient sanctity in this 12 step solution of letting go and letting God. I also impressed upon him that mostly I can manage this emotional dysfunction but often I fail to and get into a resentful anger. I would have had empathy for where the newcomer “was at in his recovery” as I had been there once too. The guy was probably in guilt too as he could been working on his recovery more. If we leave self pity to fester long enough it becomes depression, that is my experience anyway.
